Using Google Photos for Wedding Photo Sharing

Set up a collaborative wedding album

If you need file folders instead of an album, compare the cloud storage options for wedding photos. Google Drive and Google Photos serve different collection and viewing needs.

1. Sign in to the Google Account that will manage the album. In the Android Photos app, select your starting pictures, choose Create, then Album, and enter the wedding title.
2. Share the album with your intended contributors or create a sharing link. In the album’s sharing settings, check that Collaborate is on if guests should add files.
3. On Android, open the album’s Share menu and choose Show QR Code if you want a printed invitation. Google documents taking a screenshot of that code for printing.
4. Send the link to a volunteer using a different account. Ask them to contribute a photo and video, then confirm both appear from your account.
5. Print one sample and scan it from a second phone before ordering cards. Keep a clickable version of the link for messages.

These Android steps follow Google’s sharing guide; menu labels can differ on the web and iPhone. Use a photo chosen specifically for the wedding album as the starting image, so the first guest sees an intentional destination rather than an unrelated personal picture.

Understand link and account behavior

Viewing a shared link and contributing are different tests. Ask your volunteer to start signed out and note the account steps required to add a file. Do not describe an album as account-free contribution just because its cover is visible without signing in. Google’s privacy guide explains that recipients can forward a shared link and that the owner can reset it by turning link sharing off and back on.

Plan privacy deliberately

Turn off collaboration if you later want the album to become view-only. Removing a person does not stop access while link sharing remains active. Google also notes that removing a collaborator removes that person's contributed photos and comments, so download or save the final collection before changing membership.

For example, suppose a relative forwards your link to friends after the wedding. Removing that relative alone will not close access through the link. If you reset the link, update the wedding website and any reminder messages; printed codes carrying the old link will also stop being useful. Decide whether you are closing contributions or closing viewing before changing settings.

Check the contributor's backup quality

Google's backup-quality guide distinguishes Original quality from Storage saver. Storage saver can resize larger photos to 16 megapixels and videos above 1080p to 1080p. Downloading a shared item cannot restore detail already discarded earlier in its backup path. Ask your test contributor which version they uploaded, then inspect the downloaded dimensions.

For an original-file archive, compare one known phone file before and after the whole sharing route. Record pixel dimensions, video resolution and file size. Different file sizes alone do not prove visible quality loss, but unexplained changes deserve checking. Plan the export

An album you can browse is not yet a backup you control. Google says shared items saved into your library count toward storage, with certain partner-sharing exceptions. Check available space before saving the wedding collection. Keep the original album accessible while you complete the download and check the result.

On a computer, select a photo or video in Google Photos, open More and choose Download. Google’s download guidealso links to its account export instructions for a larger archive. Download a sample first and open it outside the browser. Play a speech clip with sound and inspect a photo you might want to print; a thumbnail in the album does not verify the saved file.

Agree on a handover date with anyone helping to collect pictures. Keep two copies of the finished files in separate places, and only then tidy album membership. If a family member wants a small viewing album afterward, make that selection from your checked collection rather than treating the busy contribution album as the only archive.
