Using an iCloud Shared Album for your wedding photos

What Apple’s documentation says

Apple’s Shared Albums guide says shared photos are reduced to 2048 pixels on the long edge, with a different limit for panoramas. Its Public Website option lets people who do not use iCloud view the album in a browser. Participant contribution is a separate setting; public viewing is not the same as an open upload form.

How to set up an iCloud wedding album on iPhone

1. In Settings, open your name, then iCloud and Photos. Turn on Shared Albums.
2. On iOS 26, open Photos, then Collections and Shared Albums. Tap the add button, name the album and select a few pictures. On iOS 18, find Shared Albums and tap Create.
3. Invite your contributors using their contacts, email addresses or iMessage numbers.
4. In the album’s participant settings, enable Participants Can Add Photos. Older versions call this Subscribers Can Post.

Three limits that change the wedding decision

Apple's limits page, checked September 12, lists 100 subscribers and 5,000 combined photos and videos per shared album. Videos can be up to fifteen minutes and are delivered at up to 720p. Shared Albums do not consume the ordinary iCloud storage allowance. These rules apply to Shared Albums, not every Apple photo-sharing product.

For a 120-person wedding, inviting every person as an individual subscriber would exceed the 100-subscriber limit. That does not mean 120 people cannot attend or view a public link; it means subscriber count and guest count must be compared deliberately. A browser viewing link is not a workaround that gives every viewer upload permission.

Our print-size calculation

At a chosen print density of 300 pixels per inch, a 2,048-pixel long edge spans about 6.83 inches: 2,048 ÷ 300. At 200 pixels per inch it spans 10.24 inches. These calculations explain the size tradeoff; they do not guarantee print quality, which also depends on focus, cropping, paper and viewing distance. Ask for the phone original before ordering a large print.

When this is a reasonable choice

If your parents and siblings already share albums this way, using another album for the wedding may require little explanation. It can be a pleasant place to share a curated selection after the event. Start by inviting two relatives who represent the devices and account setups in your group, rather than assuming the whole guest list will behave like your own phone.

Keep the purpose narrow. A family viewing album, a complete guest-file collection and a print-quality archive are different jobs. One tool can handle more than one, but verify each job separately before sending it to everyone.

Run a small contribution rehearsal

1. Create a test album and invite one person who regularly uses Shared Albums.
2. Have them add a recent picture while you observe the result on your device.
3. Invite someone with a different phone setup and ask them to complete the same task.
4. If you enable web viewing, open that link separately and inspect exactly what an uninvited viewer can see.
5. Save a sample image and check its dimensions before treating the album as your archive.

Decide what belongs on a public viewing link

A link that relatives can forward is convenient, but it can travel beyond the original recipients. Share a selection you are comfortable distributing. Keep sensitive pictures out of that selection and explain to guests where their contributions may appear.

A message that separates uploads from viewing

If you use two destinations, label them by their job. Replace the brackets before sending this example to your guests:

Thank you for celebrating with us! Please send the photos and videos you’d like us to keep here: [upload link]. We’ll share our favorite pictures in our family album here: [viewing link]. Please keep your original files until we’ve finished saving everything.

For example, if one relative can view the album but cannot add pictures, give them the upload link directly. Repeatedly sending the viewing link will not solve the contribution problem. Keep one collection destination in your printed QR cards, then share favorites separately after you have reviewed them.

When a separate upload page helps

Before choosing a separate collection service, compare wedding photo sharing apps by guest access, original-file handoff and how long the album stays available.

If the rehearsal fails for several guests, a browser upload destination can give the whole guest list a single set of instructions. WeddingPhoto App accepts selected photos and videos without guest accounts and lets the host control guest viewing. You can still keep an Apple album for sharing favorites afterward. That combination makes sense when the two links have clearly different roles.
