Protect the quiet zone
DENSO WAVE's QR documentation specifies a clear margin four modules wide on every side. A module is one small square in the symbol, not a fixed millimetre measurement. Keep artwork, borders and text outside that clear area. Source checked September 12, 2026.
A longer encoded URL can produce a denser symbol. Use a stable, concise destination where possible. Dark modules on a plain light background are easier to proof than metallic foil, patterned paper or low-contrast decorative colours. Do not sacrifice scanning for a palette match.
Run a physical proof test
- Print at the actual final size on the intended stock.
- Scan on an iPhone and an Android phone with no host account signed in.
- Try the lighting and distance a guest is likely to use.
- Confirm the destination and complete the task, including RSVP submission or a permitted test upload.
- Check the printed fallback URL character by character.
- Retest if the layout, paper, code or destination changes.
There is no evidence-based reason to promise that one inch, one contrast percentage or one export resolution works for every design. Record your own proof result instead.
When a code is unnecessary
If all essential details fit on the invitation and guests can reply through a familiar method, a QR code may add little. It is also a poor choice if its destination expires before guests need it, requires an unexpected account or offers no alternative when scanning fails.
For a digital invitation, provide a clickable link: asking someone to scan a code displayed on their own phone adds friction. Keep the code for print and the link for messages.
Keep the photo request separate from permission to post

Make the ask easy
Collect the photos guests actually took.
Give guests one QR code, let them upload from the browser, and keep the gallery under your control. Photos, videos, late uploads, and one download when you are ready.

There is no size that guarantees scanning across every code, printer and phone. Start with a generous code area, preserve its quiet zone and test the final physical proof at the intended distance.
Can one code handle RSVP and wedding photos?
A QR code opens one destination. That destination can offer clearly labelled RSVP and photo links, but do not label the printed code as RSVP if it opens an unrelated upload page.
